- 1). Remove any weeds that are growing around your vegetable plants. Pull the weeds out of the ground with gloved hands, making sure you have removed the roots along with the visible foliage above the soil line.
- 2). Spread the black wood mulch over your vegetable garden soil using a garden rake or hoe. A 2- to 3-inch layer of black wood mulch should suffice.
- 3). Remove any mulch that is covering the foliage of your plants by brushing it off gently with your gloved hands. Pat the mulch around each plant to remove air pockets.
- 4). Water your vegetable garden using a soaker hose. Keep in mind that mulching will help with water retention, so frequent waterings may not be necessary. Stick your finger into the soil to a 1-inch depth before each watering. If the soil feels dry, add more water. If the soil feels moist to a depth of 1 inch, skip the scheduled watering.
- 5). Remove the old mulch from your garden in the spring and replace it with fresh black wood mulch.
