- 1). For rectangular areas, measure the length, or the longest side. For example, the length of a room along the longest wall may be 12 feet.
- 2). Measure the width, or shortest side, of your room. For example, the width of your room's shortest wall may be 10 feet.
- 3). Multiply Step 1 by Step 2. 12 feet * 10 feet = 120 feet, which is the area, or square footage, of the room.
