- 1). Choose the liturgical symbols you want to place on the candle. Most christening candles will include a few symbols plus the child's name and the date of the christening. Consider how large you want each of these elements to be.
- 2). Dip a cheap paint brush into the shellac and place a thin coating of the material over the body of the candle where you want to place any lettering or designs. Rinse off the paintbrush and keep to the side. Allow the shellac to dry completely.
- 3). Draw the liturgical symbols and the child's name on the candle using a simple, soft pencil. Do not press the pencil into the candle very hard so that you do not create dents in the candle wax. Be sure that each symbol remains within the areas you prepared with shellac.
- 4). Paint over the pencil outlines you created in Step 3 using oil paints and a fine-point paint brush. Keep the color palette simple and use two or three colors. Allow the oil paints to dry overnight.
- 5). Dip the first paintbrush from Step 2 into the shellac and place a thin coating of shellac over the painted designs. Allow the candle to dry completely before using it.
