Definition:
A groin protector is a piece of protective gear for cricket players that is worn to protect the genitals.
Also Known As:
- abdominal protector
- box
- cup
Notes:
- Groin protectors are manufactured out of tough plastic and a rubber cushion at the edges. They are built to withstand repeated high-speed impacts from a cricket ball. You would, however, be wise to inspect its integrity if it were to be struck.
- While the groin protector is most commonly associated with cricket batters, it is also often worn by fielders who stand close to the bat. For example, a player fielding at short leg or silly mid-off is at high risk of being struck by the ball after the batter plays a shot. (Learn more about fielding positions at A Simple Guide to Cricket Fielding Positions.)
- There isn't much else to say about this one. Either you value your genitals, or you don't. If you do, and you want to put them in the path of a cricket ball travelling at high speed on a regular basis, get a groin protector and use it.
Examples:
- It's happened to the best. Here's a clip of West Indies' six-hitting superstar Chris Gayle getting hit where it hurts most. And here's a clip of a sickening blow to Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Sami. The agony on their faces after being struck makes these videos painful to watch.
