The Development of Teacher Evaluations

    Teacher's Understanding of Standards

    • Some teacher evaluation programs will examine how the teacher views the current teaching position. This can include the standards of teaching expected by the teacher herself. For instance, a teacher might feel that the students' learning and growth is the most important aspect of teaching, while other instructors may feel that it is more important to identify each student's problems in the classroom. Identifying the key practices utilized in the classroom by each teacher can help the evaluator determine whether the teacher is meeting the expectations of the school board.

    Student Feedback

    • Some teacher evaluations will take the students' opinions and perspectives into consideration. This can include whether the students like the teacher, how much they have learned in a given class by the teacher in question and any basic suggestions on how to improve the lessons or class.

    Teaching Methods

    • While some teachers rely heavily on textbooks, others teach from knowledge and through practical exercises and presentations. Each method must be evaluated to ensure that students get the best possible education through various teaching methods. These methods can include textbooks, practical examples, demonstrations of textbook information, video clips, student participation and basic group work assignments.

    Teacher Planning

    • Once a teacher enters a classroom, it is expected that he has a lesson plan ready so the students get a particular amount of information. This is important since the students must learn a specific amount from each class each semester. If one lesson is missed or drags out, the entire schedule falls behind. The teacher must be able to plan ahead and ensure that students are taught the necessary information each semester. This can be evaluated by checking the student's knowledge after each semester.

    Classroom Environment

    • The classroom environment may not be solely the responsibility of the teacher, as the school itself may not have enough funds for proper chairs, table and classroom decorations. However, the teacher can still be evaluated in terms of how she decorates the classroom and how well she keeps it clean during class hours. The goal is to have an interactive and friendly classroom for students.
