- 1). Unplug the winch from the power supply.
- 2). Remove the two 5/16 x 1-inch bolts and 5/16-inch washers that hold the protective chain cover over the chain and sprockets of the Hewitt winch. Put the bolts, washers and cover to the side.
- 3). Loosen the outer nuts on the motor mounting plate bolts by turning them counterclockwise with a socket wrench. These are the nuts that are closest to the larger of the two sprocket wheels. Loosening these will give you better access to the inner nuts, which are closer to the smaller sprocket wheel.
- 4). Rotate the inner nuts counterclockwise if you want to increase the tension on the winch chain. Turn the nuts until the chain is tightened and then re-tighten the outer nuts in a clockwise fashion.
- 5). Adjust the large sprocket wheel if it is not in line with the small sprocket wheel. There are a set of screws on the sprocket shank that you tighten or loosen to make the adjustment.
- 6). Replace the protective chain cover and then tighten the bolts and washers into their original position until snug.
