Always be on the water when the trout are most likely to be active.
Many times having a successful day on the water has more to do with whether or not the fish that you are fishing for are active than it does with any other factor, which is why you need to study the phase of the moon (new moon is the best) and when the moon is rising and/or setting (fishing will be best during the hour or so that coincides with either of these events) on the particular day that you are going to be fishing for rainbow trout.
If you are on the water when the rainbows are active, you will catch more fish, it's as simple as that.
Next there is the way in which your bait is presented to the rainbows that you are fishing for.
You always want the focus to be your bait and not your hooks, which means using hooks that are as small as possible anytime that you are trout fishing.
For gang hooks and salmon egg hooks this means size # 8, 10, or 12, and with treble hooks this means size #12 or 18.
And don't worry, large rainbow trout can be caught on very small fishing hooks.
For example, I regularly catch twenty plus inch rainbow while using #10 gang hooks.
