• Invest in a wooden table. A country kitchen is not complete without one. Wooden tables, as well as wooden chairs, are very durable and will last for years.
  
  Install countertops that have a wood grain. The color of the countertops should be a lighter color than the wood in the rest of the kitchen.
  
  Replace solid wood cabinet doors with doors that have glass inserts. Country kitchens of the past utilized the glass cabinet doors to display china and home canning jars.
  
  

Decorations

• Install a hanging pot rack and hang your pots and pans by their handles from the ceiling. Not only does this give you more space in your cabinets, but it also lends an authentic country look.
  
  Cover the table with a red-and-white checked or gingham tablecloth. Salt and pepper shakers, a wooden napkin holder, cookie jars and a sugar bowl are set in the middle of the table.
  
  Hang curtains that coordinate with the tablecloth. Generally, the curtains are opened during the day to let light in.
  
  

More Decorations

• Hang large wooden spoons and forks on the wall. Replace any metal handles with wooden knobs. Use pottery crocks on the countertops to hold large utensils. Traditionally, chickens, roosters, chili peppers and breadbaskets are images used in country-style decorating. You also can hang a ceramic rooster on the wall and accompany it with kitchen towels and oven mitts in rooster designs. Alternatively, chili pepper images on the same medium, along with real dried chili peppers hanging from the corner, is another option. Use breadbasket designs in the same vein as the previous suggestions. Others designs include garden flower scenes, dairy cows, and pigs and chickens, as well as apples, pies and cakes and/or rustic wagon wheels with old-fashioned crank-style water spigots.
  
  Paint the kitchen in neutral tones. Light brown, light green, pale yellow, white and light peach colors are the most popular. The light tones will enhance the bold colors of the tablecloth and bright colors of the designs. Set plants in the corners or along the wall under a window.
  
  Flooring follows the same design as the rest of the decorations, with colorful braided rugs placed at the cooking area, as well as under the table and at the sink.
