Recently, a report was published by a Hong Kong Media. According to the report, the latest public opinion survey among the Americans and Chinese shows that there has been a slight improvement in the mutual impression of people of these two countries to each other. But to build a deep trust between them, there is still a long way to go.
The survey, conducted by the Committee of 100, Chinese-American elite group involved the public, entrepreneurs, policy makers and opinion leaders in China and the U.S. In the United States, 1000 public, 244 of the opinion leaders, 120 of the business elites, and 36 decision makers have been surveyed; in China 3775 public people, 216 of opinion leaders and 162 of business elites have been questioned.
The survey shows that the majority of U.S. respondents believe that the trade deficit with China should blame to the U.S. government.
U.S. leaders often say that the Sino-US relation is one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world today, and the poll results are consistent with this argument. Except the U.S. policy makers still believe that the United Kingdom and Japan are more important to the United States, the American public, the business elites and opinion leaders regard China as the most important country to the United States in the world today. Even more than 80% of opinion leaders and business elites believe that China is the most important and the ration of them who believe that China is unimportant is rather low.
Similarly, China also attaches great importance to the United States. 60 percent of the Chinese general public maintain that the United States is the most important to China, and the ration of business elites and opinion leaders who hold this view is even up to 90%. According to the Chinese respondents, only Russia enjoys the importance that can be compared to the importance of the U.S.
Looking for the common interests of the two countries, people of the two nations mention the trade, global financial stability, environmental, energy, Asia-Pacific security, anti-terrorism, and so on. Americans are far more concerned with the nuclear non-proliferation than the Chinese people.
The vast majority of the two peoples have recognized that trade between the two countries is mutually beneficial. Although American politicians often "whip" China's trade policies because of the trade deficit, most Americans blame the trade deficit with China to the U.S. government. As to the issue whether it is China that robs U.S. of jobs, people in the United States and China have sharply different reactions. The vast majority of Americans believe that the United States should encourage China to invest in the U.S, and the biggest advantage is to create job vacancies and help to improve US-China relations.
