My family has had Golden Retrievers for years now.
Several years ago my daughter wanted a puppy and she decided that she wanted a Golden Retriever.
We took into consideration some of the problems we might encounter with a Golden, the pros the breed and the cons of the breed.
Goldens need a lot of room.
They are a large dog and they have a lot of energy.
They are also very social so if you are are going to leave them home alone all the time or tied up in the back yard, please pick another breed.
They are great family dogs and they want to be part of the family.
They are great dogs around children, but remember they are large and if you have really small children, they could get knocked over.
Golden Retrievers love the water.
We live near the water and both our retrievers are always in the water.
They also need to have a place to run and they need exercise.
We have a large stock of tennis balls around our house and you can throw balls and have them bring it back for hours.
They never seem to get tired of that game.
Throw the ball into the water so they have to swim after it and they will be in heaven.
There is one thing that is really irritating about this breed.
Hair.
And lots of it.
One of our dogs has really long blonde hair underneath and even though he is a gorgeous dog, it is not that much fun to lay a dark colored jacket down somewhere and pick it up to find it covered with hair.
We brush both of them all the time and have special combs, but be warned that the hair is a problem.
Buy a good vacuum cleaner.
You will need one.
Goldens are great with kids.
My grandson and our dog are the best of friends.
When he comes to visit, they are inseparable from the minute he gets here.
That dog is very protective of that little boy and would die for him.
Keep in mind though that they are big dogs and if really small children should hurt the dog while sleeping or startle them they might nip them a little.
Of course, I don't know of a dog that wouldn't do that.
It's in their nature.
Overall, they are great dogs.
We have had several dogs and our Goldens are probably our favorite of all of them because they just seem to be part of the family.
My daughter, who is in college now, still takes hers wherever she goes.
We tried to get her to leave him here when she left, but she wouldn't hear of it.
That's OK though, at least we know she has a trusting companion with her while away from home.
