- The wire fits into a small, hollow opening or "cup" on the end of the contact. The opening slants to allow the soldering iron to make a better heat contact on one side.
- Solder cup contacts fit in single or multiple pin connectors, in a wide variety of sizes and shapes in various designs for a multitude of uses.
- Solder cup contacts hold wires of 18, 20 or 22 gauge (22 is smaller). When necessary, a cup will accommodate two 22 gauge wires.
- First heat and coat or "tin" the wire with solder. Then heat and partially fill the cup with solder. Heat it again and insert the wire. Always apply heat to the higher side of the slanted opening.
- Solder cup contacts are used in single pin connectors for radio frequency antenna leads. Other specialty uses include multiple pin connectors for computer interfaces and aircraft wiring.
