- 1). Measure 12 inches out from the slope you are building the wall in front of.
- 2). Excavate an area that is 6 inches deep and 28 inches wide.
- 3). Tamper down the soil at the bottom of the trench.
- 4). Pour 6 inches of base material into the trench to fill it up. Tamper down the material and fill to the top if necessary. Leave 1 inch of space from the top of the trench.
- 5). Run a board along the base material to make it as smooth as possible.
- 6). Place the first level of cinder blocks onto the base material. Set a 4-foot spirit level on top of the cinderblock lengthwise and a torpedo level along the width. Tap the blocks with a rubber mallet to make the blocks level.
- 7). Place a 1/2-inch pin into the cinder block and pound it down into the base material with a rubber mallet. Tap the pins until they are even with the cinder block top.
- 8). Set the second course of blocks on top of the first, setting the blocks back 3/4 inch and staggering the blocks so no joints line up. Set new pins in to this layer and pound them down into the second set of blocks.
- 9). Build the wall up to 3 to 4 feet in height. Fill the area behind the wall with gravel to aid in drainage.
