- Texas Umbrella trees are deciduous. Their leaves naturally turn golden or yellow before falling off each year. If the leaves turn yellow as the weather cools during the fall, the tree probably does not have a health problem. If the leaves start to yellow during the spring or summer, the tree may have a nutrient deficiency.
- An iron deficiency causes yellow leaves from a disease called chlorosis in deciduous trees. When a tree has chlorosis, its leaves change from green to greenish-yellow to yellow starting in the areas in between the leaf veins.
- Test the soil for pH level and iron content by using an at home testing kit or be sending a soil sample to a university or lab. A soil pH of 7.5 or above prevents a Texas umbrella tree from absorbing iron, regardless of the soil's iron content. Adding sulfur lowers the soil pH, which will help trees absorb iron. If soil tests show a low iron content, add a fertilizer that contains iron.
