- 1). Dig a hole two times the width and depth of the tree's root ball in a sunny location. Add soil amendments such as compost, manure or peat moss to give the soil a loose consistency.
- 2). Water the root ball of the tree if it seems dry.
- 3). Set the tree in the hole and replace soil, leaving the stem above ground.
- 4). Tamp down the soil to make sure all air pockets are removed. These air pockets will dry out the roots quickly if not removed.
- 5). Water the tree deeply.
- 6). Fertilize the soil around the tree with a high-nitrogen fertilizer. Do not place fertilizer directly on tree. Direct it onto the soil around the roots.
- 7). Remove weeds and grass from around the tree during the first year. Then, mulch to keep weed growth down. Do not use Roundup to spot-treat weeds.
- 8). Prune to remove broken or crowded branches to preserve your willow tree.
