Another Reason to Quit Smoking

If you are a smoker, you probably know that cigarettes are not good for you. They can cause a multitude of health problems such as cancer, emphysema, heart attacks, and stroke. Smoking cigarettes might be so ingrained into your lifestyle, however, that you don't know how you could possibly ever quit smoking. Luckily, there are hundreds of people and organizations out there that are willing to help you. There are nicotine replacement patches and gum that you can utilize, there are pills out there that curb the cravings, and dozens of support groups that are willing to invest their time and energy in order to help you out. For elderly smokers, there might seem to be little reason to quit, but even older folk can benefit from ceasing to smoke. The health benefits might not appear overnight, but even after a few weeks, your body starts to recover from habitual smoking.

A new report details yet another reason why you should quit smoking. In a nutshell, smoking cigarettes is extremely expensive. According to some estimates, poorer smokers often spend up to a quarter of their yearly income on purchasing cigarettes. If you are in a lower socioeconomic group, you know that money is precious. Wasting it on cigarettes is a huge waste of your resources, especially for something that will do you so much harm.

The good news is that the smoking habit is on the decline in our nation. The same study indicated that between 2003 and 2010, the amount of cigarette smoking going on decreased across all economic groups by about 20 percent. This is a good thing, but there's still a long way to go to bring more awareness action to the cause of quitting smoking.

The government has done a lot to help stave off the amount that people smoke. High cigarette and other tobacco product taxes are now commonplace in many states. Cigarettes are more expensive now than ever before. This might help ward off future smokers, which is definitely a good thing, but to those who are addicted and think they are unable to quit, this price hike has become a huge burden.

The easiest way around this is to simply stop smoking. Going cold turkey might feel awful on your body, but it is possible in the vast majority of cases. If you really need help, your doctor can offer many choices that will help you, but these are often even more expensive than the cigarettes themselves.

The elderly area already at a high risk of getting ill. Smoking only exacerbates this. If you are a senior citizen that smokes, you owe it to yourself and your family to try quitting. You will greatly improve the quality of your life in a very short timeframe.
