Soups, cereals, salsa and dips are all great bowl foods. But sometimes, what starts in the bowl misses the mouth and makes a mess.
A group of California surfers say they've come up with a solution they call The Calibowl.
Lisa DeMichael is a member of our MomsLikeMe Try It Team. She is mom to four kids, ranging in age from four to nine, and knows a thing or two about messy eating.
Lisa welcomed the chance to try the Calibowls.
The serving bowls are produced by Simple Wave LLC with a patented no-spill lip. The lip was modeled after the crest of a wave, pushing food back onto a utensil.
Jeff Bollengier, a surfing dad, came up with the idea while surfing in Baja Mexico 20 years ago.
The Calibowls are made from BPA-free plastic. The DeMichael children scooped up mac n' cheese, cereal, ice cream, dry snacks, and even salsa.
For the younger DeMichael children, the lip of the bowl did help them get the food on their utensils.
"It didn't seem like they were spilling it, or the ice cream it was a little neater, it wasn't all over them," Lisa said.
Cali-bowls also makes a "baby bowl" with a suction cup that prevents "sliding." Lisa really liked the toddler bowls concept.
"Because if you have parties, you can stick it on the (table) and if kids are going after it, it's not going to slide off the table. So I do like the suction cup idea," Lisa said.
Four Calibowls cost about $30. Lisa thought the price was a bit steep.
"I am a mom of four and kind of watching what I spend," she said. But she does give the Calibowl high marks for its innovative design and living upto its promise.
"Out of 5 stars, I would rate the Calibowl 4 stars," Lisa said.
Simple Wave has what they call a Zero Landfill Policy. Consumers can send their old BPA Free Bowls back to the company as part of a "Recycle-a-Bowl" program.
In return, the company will give a 20 percent discount on future purchases.
