- 1). Lay a sheet of newspaper on the seat of a kitchen chair. If the back edge of the seat curves, flip the newspaper up approximately 4 inches at the back of the seat and press it into the seat and seat back seam. This will create a crease line in the paper.
- 2). Use your hands to crease the paper on the side and front edges of the chair to complete the pattern shape. Cut out the newspaper pattern along the creased lines.
- 3). Cut a slight curve on any sharp corners on the pattern. This will allow the cover to better hug the depth at the corners of the cushion.
- 4). Place a 22-inch square by 2-inch thick foam cushion insert on your work table. Center the pattern on the foam. Draw around the foam using a permanent marker.
- 5). Cut straight into the foam along the line, using an electric meat carving knife. When the shape has been cut out, soften the sharp edges by cutting along the edges at a slight angle.
- 6). Lay 2/3-yard of quilt batting on your work table. Place the cut cushion insert on the batting. Wrap the batting around it. This will soften the foam shape and contour of the cushion.
- 7). Overlap the batting edges, cut and pin. Attach the batting edges using a basting stitch.
- 8). Fold the 2/3-yard seat cushion fabric in two layers with the right sides facing. Place the pattern on the fabric and pin, allowing for 1 1/2 inches of extra space on all sides.
- 9). Cut around the pattern 1 1/2-inches larger than the shape to allow for the depth of the foam and seam allowance. Cut two lengths of 1-inch-wide bias tape, 20 inches long. These are for the chair seat cushion ties.
- 10
Fold a bias tape strip in half, matching the long edges. Iron the tape and pin the long open edges. Top stitch the length as close to the pinned edge as possible. Repeat for the remaining bias tape. - 11
Lay the two layers of the cushion fabric on your work table with the right sides together. Pin around the edges, leaving the back edge unpinned. - 12
Fold a tie in half, matching the short cut ends. Insert the tie between the two layers of the cushion. Match the folded end of the tie at a back corner edge of the cushion fabric. Pin the folded edge between the layers. - 13
Repeat the step above with the other tie on the other back corner edge. Note: The tie ends are sandwiched inside the cover fabric. - 14
Sew around the pinned side and front edges of the cushioned fabric using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Sew 2 inches inward on both back corners of the cushion cover, leaving the remaining edge open. Turn the chair seat cushion cover right side out. - 15
Cover the batting-covered cushion insert in a recycled dry cleaner bag to assist in sliding the insert into the cushion without resistance. Slip the foam insert through the back opening of the cushion cover. Adjust the cover around the cushion and slip out the plastic bag. Pin together the back opening of the cover and hand stitch closed. - 16
Place the cushion on the chair and attach the ties to the chair back.
