- 1). Lay your burl wood on a flat surface and rock it back and forth to check for any warping. If the piece rocks back and forth quite a bit, you will need to flatten one side with a hand plane or jointer. Lay it on the flat surface periodically as you flatten it to check for level.
- 2). Set your band saw to take approximately a 1/8 of an inch cut. Mark a large triangle on one end of the wood with white chalk or a pencil. This allows you to keep the veneer in order as you cut it.
- 3). Turn on the band saw and let it get to full speed. Slowly feed the wood into the band saw at an even and steady rate. As you get close to the end of the cut, use a push stick to finish pushing the wood through the band saw.
- 4). Lay each veneer slice down on a separate table as it comes off of the band saw. This helps you keep it in order. Keep slicing and stacking in this manner until you have the whole piece cut. If the veneer pieces in the stack get out of order, just refer to the triangle you drew earlier and place them back in the proper arrangement.
- 5). Cover a piece of plywood with newspaper and lay each veneer slice down flat on the newspaper. Cover the veneer with more newspaper and then another piece of plywood. Clamp the plywood pieces using wood clamps spaced 4 to 5 inches apart. Allow the veneer to sit in the clamps for at least a week to ensure it dries properly.
