So, your at a child's birthday party and decide to share in a slice of birthday cake after everyone has finished joyfully singing "Happy Birthday" and the candles have been blown out. Good Job, nothing wrong with this.
Now, however, it's your birthday. The day after, you have all the leftover cake in your refrigerator. It tempts you…calling out your name…just begging you to at least swipe your finger against its ohh soo sweet icing… are you drooling yet from the imagery already? Well, that's okay, you're simply eating my words, no calories required! Oh yeah, back to the cake in the fridge. You pull it out, saying to yourself, "I'll just have a small slice for breakfast." But all of a sudden, one bite leads to another as you begin to remember that one of your best friends couldn't make it to your birthday due to poor weather. You have stuffed yourself silly to bury the pain, with just an empty plate of crumbs left in view.
Eating for emotion not letting emotion to eat you, may seem difficult to comprehend. However, it is actually a bit simpler than it appears. To eat for emotion; such as to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other lovely, memorable life event is perfectly normal and definitely invited. However, letting any negative thoughts to slip in can trigger your emotions to take over and before you know it you have eaten half or more of the food in your pantry.
Don't feel alone in all of this. A lot of people have been or are right at this moment where you are. They hoard food, hide food, binge on food. It's fueled by obsessions, compulsions all under the control of emotions.
Emotional eating is cyclical. Some can go cold turkey, while others need more support to end their torture. But it is reversible indeed. It just takes commitment and lots of will power. It may not end today, maybe not even tomorrow, but one day you will once again be eating for the RIGHT emotions. To abuse food is to abuse yourself. You are priceless! you are worth it! you are amazing!
Reward yourself for accomplishments with other things besides food. If you're a woman, perhaps a manicure or shopping trip. Or, if you are a man, maybe go play a round of golf or watch your favourite sport.
Make your cycle end more like a load of laundry does, you put the load in and when it's done, that's all, you're done. Don't let emotions make for your meals to get out of control and become a vicious cycle. You're essentially in the drivers seat. Sure, you will have a few detours, bumps and hills along the way, but you are the one who can steer yourself in the right direction. If not, no worries, seek the support necessary and carpool!
Until the next tasty thought!
