- 1). Place six to eight sticks around the base of the oak tree, with each about 2 inches from the base. Tie string to the stakes, forming a circle.
- 2). Place 14 to 20 stakes around the base of the oak tree, which each of these about 6 feet from the base of the tree. Tie string to the stakes again, forming a second circle.
- 3). Dig out the area between the two string circles. Dig down between 2 and 4 inches, but be careful not to cut any shallow roots as you dig. The looser the soil is, the deeper you need to dig, so solid soils will only require 2 inches, while sandy soils need to be at least 4 inches deep.
- 4). Search through the dug-out area and remove any weeds or grass that is still sticking through or lying on the dirt. Also remove any grass between the inner circle and the base of the tree.
- 5). Purchase 9 cubic feet of organic mulch for every 1 inch of circle depth around the tree.
- 6). Place your organic mulch in the dug-out area.
- 7). Even out the mulch with your rake. Don't worry if the mulch is mounded a little bit, as it will settle over time.
