- 1). Complete higher education training in the field of early childhood learning. This field focuses on the physical, social and mental development of babies and young children. A degree in early childhood learning can be attained from a 2-year or 4-year academic institution. Holders of bachelor's degrees are given preference in the hiring process.
- 2). Learn first aid basics. First aid training helps people learn how to treat minor wounds such as burns, bee stings and animal bites. A course in first aid will help you to determine if a small child's injury can be treated in school or needs further investigation at a medical facility such as a hospital emergency room. Classes in first aid are given on many college campuses.
- 3). Learn CPR. CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. CPR techniques are used to revive people when they have breathing difficulties. Babies and small children have specific physical characteristics that may differ from adults. A class that teaches CPR techniques with a focus on babies and young children is of great assistance when applying for a job as Head Start teacher. Completion of a class will result in a certificate indicating proficiency. Classes are given on college campuses, hospitals and at community centers such as a local YMCA. Look for classes specializing in techniques used for early childhood learners.
- 4). Complete a term of student teaching. Spend a semester working in a Head Start classroom as an unpaid intern. Three to 6 months as an active participant in an actual Head Start classroom will help you gain firsthand experience in the field. Ask for a recommendation from the supervising teacher.
- 5). Apply for a job as a Head Start teacher. Head Start programs generally take place in elementary schools; however, some programs may take place in individual preschools located in a separate facility. Contact the nearest Head Start office to find program locations nearest you. Make sure your application form is completely filled out. Applications are usually accepted on a year round basis. Consider applying during the summer before the start of the term when many teachers are hired.
