- The most common types of mange found in dogs and cats are notedric, sarcoptic, demodectic and cheyletiella mange and ear mites.
- Symptoms of mange in dogs and cats include intense itching, skin irritation, skin lesions, rashes and loss of hair. Secondary symptoms include scratching and biting on the body of the animal as a reaction to the itching.
- Mange mites generally cannot be seen with the human eye. In some cases, mange can be seen in the ear canal of a dog or cat as a white speck or appear as white flakes that look like dandruff.
- Mange is treated with tablets, special drops, medicated baths and shampoos. To avoid a recurrence of mange, clean the pet's living environment with a mite remover.
- Most types of mange found in dogs and cats can be easily cured if detected early. Consult a veterinarian as soon as symptoms appear.
- Humans can develop mange by coming into contact with an infected dog. Symptoms of small raised bumps on the body will result but are temporary. If the symptoms continue, consult a physician.
