- 1). Remove siding where the deck will be attached to the house.
- 2). Bolt the deck's ledger board, usually a 2-by-8, to the side of the house with lag screws and washers. The ledger board is the heavy, horizontal board that attaches the deck to the house. It should be placed on top of felt or house wrap.
- 3). Bend the flashing into a backwards "L" shape and attach it to the top of the ledger board with an adhesive or other fastener recommended by the manufacturer. The flashing should extend at least 4 inches up the side of the house.
- 4). Place the felt or house wrap that is attached to the top of the outside wall over the 4 inches of flashing that extends up the wall.
- 5). Cut grooves into the underside of the deck board that will lie on top of the flashing and ledger board to channel water away from the house. Attach with deck nails or screws.
- 6). Replace siding, trimming to fit around the deck, if necessary.
