- The body mass index, or BMI, is a method of determining if an individual is healthy, underweight or overweight. The BMI is an accurate measurement of health based on the height and weight of the child. It is determined by dividing the child's weight in pounds by the height in inches squared and multiplying the result by 703. For example, if the child is 50 pounds and 42 inches tall, the equation is 50/(42) squared times 703 for a BMI of 19.9. In children and teens, the BMI is combined with age and percentiles to determine healthy weight.
- Sleep tests are designed to determine healthy patterns to follow for children and adults. Parents can not only determine if their children are getting enough sleep at night, but also if they are sleeping on an appropriate mattress or if they are sleeping on inappropriate bedding for their age.
- There are online interactive assessment tools available to help with determining appropriate nutrition, health risks, activity levels or knowledge testing. Parents can use online tools to assess the health of their children and their children's sleep, eating and activity habits. If the children need changes, there are even plans available to help make changes as necessary, such as adding more activity.
- Nutrition is one of the most important parts of a healthy lifestyle. Children need to learn from a young age how to make healthy food choices and how to minimize junk foods. Analysis tools for nutrition specifically look at the types of foods eaten on a regular basis, as well as the amount of junk foods, fast food or soft drinks the child takes in and determines where changes are needed for a healthier lifestyle.
