What Are My Chances Of Success Of Conceiving After Tubal Ligation?

Many women across the United States and the world choose to have a procedure called a tubal ligation each year. This procedure typically involves the cutting or clipping of the fallopian tubes. The procedure can be done in several different ways, some of which involved burning part of the tubes to cause scarring. This scarring blocks the fallopian tubes so that the egg can not meet up with the sperm between the ovaries and the uterus. However, as with many surgical procedures, some women decide later that they desire to have another child after all. In these cases, the question of conceiving after tubal ligation often ends up being directed at the doctor.

The unfortunate fact is that many doctors have no idea that there is an option called tubal ligation reversal. Instead, they usually recommend the expensive procedure called in vitro fertilization. That procedure has a lower success rate of about 35% per cycle. It is also very expensive at about $10,000 to $12,000 per cycle attempted. The woman has to go through quite a bit to have the procedure each month by injecting strong hormones to produce as many eggs as possible. The doctor needs to be able to harvest those eggs, so there are invasive procedures that must be done during each cycle.

On the other hand, tubal reversal is a much simpler procedure. First of all, it's permanent so a woman only has to have it done once. She can then try to get pregnant as often as she likes from then on. Secondly, the procedure is much less expensive and only has to be done that one time. Finally, the success rate is higher at about 70%. Of course, there are criteria that a woman must meet before she can have the surgery.

Before having a tubal reversal in the hopes of conceiving after tubal ligation, a woman will need to consult with her surgeon to make sure she is a good candidate for the surgery. Her age, the type of tubal ligation done and the remaining tubal lengths are all factors in her potential rate of success.
