Decide how long you would like to stay in Australia. This will affect your choice of visas to apply for. You should also think about where in Australia you would like to live. - 2). Contact the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council to learn about the specific opportunities available for nurses in Australia. This is the assessment body that will determine if your skills and qualifications are suitable for nursing practice in Australia. If you obtained your nursing qualification in Australia you will not need to have your skills assessed.
- 3). Choose the visa you want to apply for from the list on Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website. If you already have a job lined up, you can apply for the temporary business (Long Stay) visa (subclass 457) for up to four years. If you don't have a job offer, determine whether you are eligible to apply as a skilled migrant based on your qualifications and experience as a nurse.
- 4). Apply for your work visa. The DIAC website lists all of the visa requirements and you can apply online once you've completed your skills assessment and are enrolled with the regulatory body of the state or territory in which you want to work. You will usually be required to pass a health examination and have a chest x-ray.
- 5). Wait for your visa approval. Once your visa is approved, you will be able to enter Australia and work legally as a nurse. You will need to enter the country by a specific date and will be allowed to remain in Australia until your visa expires or until you apply for another visa to extend your stay.
