FLASH, Ahhhhhhahhhhh, Saviour of the Universe!!!
Since I was a teenager I've played in a number of rock bands, punk bands, indie bands, and cover bands. Most of the stuff I've played has been original, but it's always a good thing to throw in a few covers to get the crowd pumping. Some have worked better than others, but a few really get people craving for more. We've had more comments on our website and myspace that say "Wow, Hot Stuff ROCKED!" than "We really liked your new tune". People identify with classics, and if you pick a good one that brings back nostalgia then you're really onto a winner.
One such song is FLASH's THEME by the rock band Queen. It's an absolute gem of a cover as it's not an obvious choice but everyone has a little section of their memory which is filled by it. If your fans go home singing "Flash, ahhhhhaaahhhh!" then I'd say your gig really went down a storm.
So what other great covers are there. We found Jumping Jack Flash from the Rolling Stones always worked well, but was a good match for our singer's style. We also found David Bowie songs to be a big hit with the punters.
Another great song, and not so obvious, was Hot Stuff by Donna Summer. Thumbing bass line, catch tune, great little solo, and everyone goes home singing it. What could be better?
If you can recommend any other good covers then leave a message!
I'll leave you with the wonderful lyrics to Flash's Theme by Queen, courtesy of www.queensonglyrics.com.
Flash - a-ah - saviour of the universe
Flash - a-ah - he'll save everyone of us
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Flash - a-ah - he's a miracle
Flash - a-ah - king of the impossible
He's for everyone of us
Stand for everyone of us
He'll save with a mighty hand
Every man every woman
Every child - with a mighty flash
Flash - a-ah
Flash - a-ah - he'll save everyone of us
Just a man
With a man's courage
He knows nothing but a man
But he can never fail
No one but the pure in heart
May find the golden grail
Oh oh - oh oh
Flash
