Some of you might have heard the Chain Saw Song a couple of times and I am here to recommend two things; you listen to this song id you can and secondly, you never attempt to play it yourself. Having said that let's talk about some chainsaws.
The first chainsaw was made in 1830 but didn't get a two stroke gas motor until 1926. The two stroke engine is what gave this saw its bite. Pun intended. Dolmar was probably the first to mass produce chain saws, but MacCulloch joined soon after is still producing a remarkable chain saw.
Keeping your two stroke chainsaw lubricated is important if you really plan on keeping it for any length of time. The engine is lubricated by its fuel, which contains about 2-5% oil dissolved in the fuel. Make sure you follow the manufacturer's recommendations on this.
It is also important that the chain be oiled as well. Chain oil or bar oil should be used and used often. The centrifugal force of the chain turning throws off a lot of oil you probably won't even notice as most times it is soaked up by the sawdust. Usually the chain oil will last longer than the fuel oil, but check often just in case.
Chain saw related injuries do still occur often. Not paying attention to where both hands are, inattention and improper maintenance are sometimes the culprits. Usually though it's related to kickback. Kick back occurs when a piece of wood is not cut all the way through and the chain literally will kick back putting the bar in the users face or other body parts. This is one accident that like many others can be avoided.
What causes kickbacks? A dull chain is usually the culprit. Knowing how to disassemble the bar assembly to get to the chain to sharpen it is a good idea. No matter how tempting it might be, never sharpen the chain while it is still on the bar. Chain sharpening kits are available anywhere chainsaws are sold. If you are in doubt about how to sharpen a chain properly, ask someone. A little embarrassment is better than a lot of stitches.
Hearing protection and safety glasses are always needed. It doesn't matter if you're making a small cut or logging in the Yukon: wear them. Some areas require chainsaw training for professional and enforce a stiff fine for those who operate a chainsaw without proper safety gear. Who exactly enforces this- I have no idea.
Chain saws are definitely one of those iconic power tools that helped tame the wild forests of the world. Without them the lumber companies would not have been able to provide all the lumber that they have been able to over the last 90 years. Still chain saws should be respected at all times and proper safety and maintenance should be observed. Not doing so could result in embarrassment, dismemberment and a wet spot on the inside of your Carharts.
