- 1). Purchase pine straw. Pine straw is readily available at most home improvement stores and garden centers.
- 2). Spread pine straw in a 6- to 8-inch circle, 3 inches thick, around your tomato plant soon after planting.
- 3). Check the condition of pine straw mulch after heavy rains and add additional mulch as needed. As plant grows, add mulch so that it extends to ends of branches.
