How To Recover Lost Or Deleted Digital Photo

Lost/deleted digital photo files from a memory card or hard drive can be easily recovered using right photo recovery software. For this, you will need a card reader/writer connected to your PC.

A digital photo is a computer file from a digital camera or scanner that is made up of a series of pixels. When a digital camera takes a shot, it needs to convert the raw image data from the sensor, into a standardized file format for storage on a memory card. The commonest digital image formats are JPEG, TIFF and RAW. Most photographers choose to shoot in JPEG as they offer a very good tradeoff between file size and image quality. Even RAW photos offer the highest possible image quality but have greater requirements in file size. Reducing the file size not only mean less storage required for your photos on your computer, but also faster frame rates and more shots that can be taken in your digital cameras fastest burst sequence.
The most common reasons for the damage of photo files are:
Accidental deletion of an image
Executing the format command which wipes out an entire memory card that holds image files
Memory card/hard drive error
File transfer/interface error
RAM Failure

Whatever might be the reason, lost/deleted photo files can be recovered. You may be able to recover some or almost all the lost/deleted images if they are still intact and left without overwriting.

Its a general belief that once the photos are deleted, they are permanently wiped off, which is wrong. Digital images are stored on memory cards as a set of numbers. These numbers occupy a finite space on memory cards. Same time its not necessary that it should always be contiguous. When you delete an image or format the card, the space in which the image was stored is not essentially erased. Instead, space is marked as being available so that the system knows it can write a new image there. This is why the image will no longer be recognized by the camera or computer, even though the image is still present on the card.

Here are a few precautions you need to follow and this is essential if you want to recover any of the lost images.
Remove the memory card from your camera and put in a safe place so that you wont keep shooting.
Stop saving pictures to this card.
If you dont do so, then chances are that the deleted files might be overwritten by the new images and further rendering them unrecoverable.

If neither the camera nor the system can see the lost images, then the only way left is to use specialized software.

Amrev Photo Recovery can explore the contents of a memory card to locate and recover the image files. To use the software, you will need a card reader connected to your PC and the right software package.
