- 1). Launch Excel. Click "File," or the Microsoft Office logo in Excel 2007, then click "Open."
- 2). Navigate to the file that needs to be recovered; click on it to highlight it.
- 3). Click the black triangle next to the "Open" button at the bottom of the window; click "Open and Repair."
- 4). Click the "Repair" button. Excel will recover as much of the original document as it can. If the repair operation is unsuccessful, return to this screen and click "Extract Data" instead. Excel will attempt to recover the actual data from the spreadsheet, even if the spreadsheet itself cannot be repaired.
