- 1). Calculate the square footage of your yard, width multiplied by length. If your yard is too large to measure using a tape measure, measure it using a piece of rope or string and then measure the rope or string in increments using your tape measure. If your yard is an odd shape, divide it into a number of smaller pieces of approximately square shape, and measure those using the method above. Measure in both meters and feet, since you don't yet know how the coverage number of your seed is expressed.
- 2). Find the coverage number on the type of seed you're thinking of buying. It's usually printed toward the bottom of the packaging, right on the front.
- 3). Divide the area of your yard as calculated in step one by the coverage number on the packaging of your seed. Round the result up the the next whole number. This is how many packages you need.
