How to Open a Drain on an Inground Pool

    • 1). Turn off the pumps in the pool. If you will require an extensive look at the drainage system and the pool liner is tile, you might want to drain the pool to allow easier access. If the pool liner is vinyl, take precautions before draining the pool as vinyl pool liners shrink when they dry out and can crack.

    • 2). Locate the drain and inspect the surface of the anti-vortex lid. If you locate screws going into the top of the cover, you need a screwdriver to remove the cover. If the cover does not have screws, you need no tools to remove the cover.

    • 3). Remove the screws by turning them counterclockwise with a screwdriver and then pull the cover off to open the drain. If you have no screws, grip the cover with both hands and turn the cover counterclockwise until lit threads off the drain.
