Repair Xbox RROD - When the Red Ring of Death Happens

Your Xbox 360 might be one of those that became inflicted with the Red Ring of Death, as gamers have come to affectionately call it. If it was, you probably sent it back to Microsoft for a warranty-covered replacement. Some people, though, did not experience this problem till after their warranty expired and had to repair xbox RROD themselves. Fortunately, the home repair for this error is actually quite simple and doesn't even require expensive materials or particular knowledge.

The Red Ring of Death came about when the Xbox 360 would overheat to the point that it could no longer operate properly. The overheating alone was caused by several different factory defects, but if you follow these steps, you can fix all of the potential problems at once. Open the shell and locate the motherboard. Turn it over to find two X-clamps that cover the heat sink. Under the heat sink are the CPU and the GPU. Remove the clamps and the heat sink very carefully and clean them as stray debris can disrupt the way the heat sink functions. Also, you should clean the GPU and CPU for good measure. Put thermal compound on the heat sink before replacing it to ensure that is properly insulated. Replace the x-clamps with new screws because the original screws that Microsoft use are too sensitive to heat and can cause the protection of this area to weaken. Fasten them to a moderately tight degree and replace the shell when you are ready.

If this does not solve your problem, you may need to replace your actual graphics card. Unfortunately Microsoft's original design included a graphics card that also couldn't handle the processing power and would overheat as well, but now that you know where to find the GPU, replacing this is a breeze.
