- 1). Consider the weight of the camera, especially if you will be traveling with your photography gear in tow. One drawback of many digital SLR cameras is their size, so be sure to look at the size and weight of each camera you are considering.
- 2). Choose a camera with a high ISO rating if you plan to shoot in low light conditions. Taking pictures in dark conditions like you would find in concert halls and theaters requires a digital SLR camera with a high sensitivity to light. Digital SLR cameras are rated using ISO equivalents like 200, 400, 800 and 1600. The higher the number the more sensitive the camera will be and the easier it will be to shoot at night and in low light conditions.
- 3). Compare the burst rates on cameras you are considering, particularly if you plan to take action shots. If you are a sports photographer this burst rate will be critical, and choosing a digital SLR with a fast burst rate will make it easier to get those action shots. A fast burst rate allows you to take shot after shot, without the long delay often found with digital point and shoot cameras.
- 4). Check the type of batteries the digital SLR camera uses. Battery life is a critical consideration for professional photographers; you don't want to run short on battery power just as you line up that perfect shot. Look for a digital SLR camera that uses lithium ion batteries; these batteries will provide longer battery life than the AA batteries many cameras use.
- 5). Choose a camera with a macro feature if you foresee yourself shooting closeups of small objects. This feature makes it easier to zoom in on even the smallest objects without blurring.
