- Use dark colors. Dark colors can make any room feel less large and intimidating. Paint a dining room red to help make meals served there seem more intimate. Use dark green in a living room to add a sense of comfort and feeling snug. Paint a bedroom navy or brown to make it feel masculine, yet inviting.
- Create a niche. A niche is a space within a room that can be blocked off from the rest of the room. Place a thick canopy over a four poster bed to create a bedroom within a bedroom. Hire someone to make a window seat in a bay window complete with curtains. Line the window seat with plush pillows.
- Place thick rugs on the floor. Purchase rugs with patterns to create a sense of warmth and drama. Rugs can help deaden noises and provide a place to rest bare feet.
- Line a wall with fabric. Place battening material on the walls of the room. Top with fabric. Trim with edging. Use lush fabrics such as velvets and brocades. Consider a dark color or fabric with large print to make the room feel even cozier.
- If you would like a room to exude coziness, purchase furniture that will achieve that sensation. Choose large sofas with overstuffed cushions. Place a padded chaise lounge at one of the room. Add armchairs with footrests and padded sides. Purchase bookshelves. Fill the bookshelves with books. Hang many small pictures on the wall so that people in the room has something to see when they look around. Purchase a mantelpiece if the room doesn't have one already. Place knickknacks on the mantelpiece such as candlesticks or souvenirs from a vacation.
- Cover the windows with curtains. Curtains can help set a mood as well. Choose lined curtains in thick fabrics such as velvet. Hang the curtains from the ceiling and let the bottoms puddle on the floor. Add shades in heavy fabric underneath to completely cover the windows and reduce the amount of light in the room.
- Use the right lighting. Avoid large overhead lights that may create glare. Choose small lamps and task lighting instead. Place lamps on desks, bookcases and end tables to create a feeling that the room is being lit indirectly.
