- 1). Make sure there is not any plaster or paint crumbling, flaking or chipping. If the wall has been recently painted, make sure the paint has had a couple of days to dry before applying masking tape.
- 2). Tear off a piece of masking tape to cover the length of the wall. For long stretches, you may need another person to hold the other end of the tape.
- 3). Pull the tape straight and line it up with the wall to be painted.
- 4). Place the tape on the area. Press it into place by rubbing it against the wall until it is sealed.
- 5). Apply paint to your brush. Use a thick paint and remove enough from the brush so that it is wet but not full of paint.
- 6). Paint the area where you want the straight line. Move your brush only along the edge of the tape where you want the straight line.
- 7). Remove the masking tape immediately after painting your straight line.
