The title of this Edguy compilation is a bit misleading. The Singles implies a greatest hits type collection spanning the band's entire career. Instead, this CD collects some of the German band's EPs.
The songs from The Singles are taken from the 2004 MCD Lavatory Love Machine, the 2004 EP King Of Fools and the 2005 EP Superheroes. A couple of the songs also appeared on full-length Edguy CDs in addition to the EPs.
It's an interesting collection, as this era saw Edguy's sound transitioning from power metal to more of a mainstream hard rock/metal vibe. The epic "Judas At The Opera" clocks in at over 7 minutes, and has the traditional power metal sound and a guest appearance from Michael Kiske (Helloween). "The Savage Union" also has a harder edge, but with ample melody and hooks.
Tracks like "Holy Water" are more accessible, with orchestral elements and a radio-friendly sound. The collection wraps up with the goofy "Life And Times Of A Bonus Track."
Edguy's acoustic side is also on display, with an alternate version of "Lavatory Love Machine" and an unplugged version of Europe's "I'll Cry For You." The Singles is a decent, but by no means essential compilation, especially if you already own the EPs.
