At Coney Island's 2008 Mermaid Parade, performance artists Rev. Billy and Savitri D. brought a political edge to the party.
The married couple are performance artists and community activists. In 2008, they earned the title of "King and Queen Neptune," a special Mermaid Parade designation. In past years those honors have gone to the likes of Queen Latifah, David Byrne, Curtis Sliwa and Moby.
After the parade, Savitri D. went on a four-day hunger strike to bring attention to a public hearing, where Coney Island residents could take on the developers and voice their grievances over a multi-billion-dollar plan to build 4,500 new apartments in the area.
