- 1). Remove all vegetation and large rocks from the planting site. Loosen the soil to a depth of 10 to 12 inches, using a garden fork. Amend with 3 to 4 inches of compost.
- 2). Plant the castor bean seeds 1 inch deep and water until the soil feels moist. Leave 4 to 6 inches between each seed.
- 3). Continue to water whenever the top half-inch of soil feels dry. Add a 2-inch layer of mulch once the seedlings are 3 to 4 inches tall.
- 4). Feed every two weeks with all-purpose fertilizer. Follow instructions on the packaging for application amounts.
- 5). Place a sturdy 6- to 10-foot stake behind the plants if they are grown in a location unprotected from strong winds. Attach the plant loosely to the stake with plant ties.
- 6). Clip off faded flowers before seeds develop to keep the plants from overtaking the garden.
