- 1). Measure the distance between the floor and your pet's stomach. This measurement is where the bottom of the pet door will be installed. Mark a level line on the wall at this measurement with a pencil.
- 2). Line up the bottom of the pet door frame against your measurement. Mark a line on the wall at the top of the pet door frame and on the sides if the instructions fail to tell you how big to cut the hole for the door.
- 3). Cut the hole in the interior of the wall for the pet door with a drywall saw. Make the cuts shallow to avoid hitting any wires or cables. Use a utility knife to cut through any insulation. To cut the hole through the exterior side of the wall, use a circular saw fitted with a carborundum blade or other appropriate blade to cut through the wood sheathing and the siding material on your house -- stucco, vinyl, wood, steel, concrete, etc.
- 4). Insert the door frame into the opening you have created. You should be able to simply push the frame inside the wall opening. Be sure to use the side of the pet door designed for the inside wall. Attach the door frame to the wall with screws; the frame likely will have holes in which to place the screws. Repeat process on the exterior side of the wall, making sure you use the door frame designed for the exterior of the wall.
- 5). Caulk around the perimeter of the pet door frame on the exterior side of the wall.
