- A glider is a vehicle without an engine, transmission and power train. The Utah State DMV defines a glider kit as "the reconstructing of a large truck or truck tractor by utilizing a kit and the power train of an existing titled truck or truck tractor." When a glider kit is added to a preexisting vehicle, or you build a new vehicle with a glider kit and engine, it is given a title as a new vehicle.
- Glider kits are often implemented when you are restoring or reconstructing a large truck or truck tractor that has been wrecked or dismantled. You can also build your own vehicle if you buy the glider without the engine, power train and transmission and then add your own new or rebuilt engine and components. If you are building your own, you can customize it the way you like, as well as choosing the engine and possibly increasing your gas mileage.
- When you purchase a glider kit, it will usually be comprised of a frame, body/cab and a front axle. There are other options that may be added to the glider kit, but those are the essentials.
- If you have modified a recently purchased truck or truck tractor and installed a glider kit, you will have to contact the DMV to put the title in your name and let them know about the modifications. They will need the bill of sale for the vehicle, of course. They may also ask for the glider kit manufacturer's statement of origin, pictures or the actual vehicle for inspection, the Verification of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and any other forms required in your state.
