- 1). Drain your fountain completely.
- 2). Clean the fountain reservoir and any other exposed surfaces with a stiff nylon brush, then wipe with a clean rag. Make sure to remove any and all debris, algae and residue.
- 3). Apply bleach or peroxide, if necessary, to clean away any persistent algae.
- 4). Remove the pump from the fountain and wipe it clean. Remove the pump cover and wipe the inside of the pump too. Remove all debris from the pump filter, if there is one. If the filter is disposable, throw out the old one and install a new one.
- 5). Cover your metal water fountain with a tarp or fountain cover, weighted at the edges and corners to keep blown water or snow from getting into the fountain. If any water or snow accumulates in the fountain or its tiers, there's a good chance the fountain will crack when the liquids melt and freeze.
- 6). Place absorbent materials such as burlap or old towels in the fountain reservoir and in any tiers or other surface areas that might collect water. This step is especially imperative if you haven't covered your fountain.
