Dr.
Rajkumar, the undisputed Icon of Kannada celluloid world is a gifted artist and undoubtedly he deserves whatever success he has achieved so far.
He was all on a sudden brought under sharp focus for the entire world to watch in the year 2000 when the notorious forest brigand Veerappan kidnapped him.
But then it is equally important to remember that Dr.
Rajkumar with all his talent, is just as normal a human being as any other struggling to survive in this highly competitive field and by no means is he a God as attempted to be portrayed by some vested interests.
An incident that occurred some 30 years back would perhaps help elucidate the point: A scribe, Gangadhar Mudaliar by name, and his colleague Shiva yogi a still-photographer were whisked away and held at an undisclosed place and grilled for the whole day.
Of course this was done not by Veerappan the notorious brigand but by riotous members of this actor's fan-club! This happened in the early eighties providing climax to a controversy that was already in full rage for some time over a film on the life of Lord Basaveshwara.
It was a small write-up for Kannada Magazine Sudha authored by a young upcoming enthusiastic journalist Gangadhar Mudaliar by name.
This gentleman presently heads PRAJAVANI, Bangalore a leading Kannada newspaper as its Editor.
The write-up bearing the title (in Kannada) 'Dr.
Rajkumar, Basavanna maththu Kayyi kotta moogu' was supported by photographs of Rajkumar, Srinivasamurthy and Ashok.
[*Literally translated: Dr.
Rajkumar, Basavanna (short for Basaveshwara) and the nose that was his undoing.
] This title was perhaps a little misleading.
The actor's fans were furious thinking the remark made about the nose was aimed at their favorite Hero.
But then the very idea of holding the journalist and his still photographer captive and forcibly making them fall at the feet of the matinee idol and seek his pardon seems atrocious! But then this is exactly what happened.
In a sense the kidnap incident of the matinee idol years later seemed like a case of Divine Retribution to many.
