- One type of Ridgeway mantel clock is battery-operated. This unit is virtually maintenance-free, requiring only periodic battery changes to keep the time as accurate as possible. If the clock has a pendulum, note that the clock must be level for free movement of the pendulum.
- Key-wound mantel clocks require a bit more operational maintenance. The face of the clock has one to three keyholes that need to be wound to tighten the internal springs, which power operation of the clock.
- Some Ridgeway mantel clocks use weights. In these units, a crank is used to raise them, at least weekly. It is recommended to use only the crank; never push the weights upward with the hands, as this can damage the internal movement.
