- 1). Read Chapters one through five to familiarize yourself with the writing style of The Analects of Confucius.
- 2). Read Chapter six and pay special attention to the details, especially in section 26. In particular, make note of Yong's reaction to various questions asked by Confucius.
- 3). Research the meaning and use of the Chinese words "ren" and "junzi." Section 26 specifically deals with these terms. The term "ren" means "wise." Therefore a "ren person" would be a "wise person." "Junzi" refers to Confucius's ideal person, an obedient and humble individual who does not feel the need to be "ren."
- 4). Consider the implications of character Zai Wo using the term "ren" while Confucius counters with "junzi." Using the context of the question posed in this section about a "ren" person jumping into a well if he was told that someone was trapped at the bottom, think about what this verbal exchange meant for the dialogue between teacher and student.
- 5). Add your insights to your paper or assignment, if applicable.
