- 1). Clear a site that has good drainage and partial shade. Morning sun and afternoon shade is best, though it can grow well in dappled shade also.
- 2). Dig a hole about twice the size of the root ball with a shovel. For a vigorous, healthy maple amend your soil with organic compost and incorporate a slow-release fertilizer. Bury the root ball to the old soil line. Water in well.
- 3). Cover the root zone of the maple with a 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch. Be sure the mulch is not touching the trunk of your maple or the trunk may rot. Water your maple every other day for a week until it is established.
