Most dog training is built on a few simple commands and techniques which are vital to understand and use properly.
One of the most important techniques when training your dog is getting its attention, without that any dog owner will struggle to teach even the most basic of commands.
If your puppy or dog knows its name, that is the easiest way of getting its attention.
However dogs have to be taught how to respond to their name being called, so every time you use the name and the dog looks at you, you should reinforce this good behaviour with a treat.
That way your dog will begin to learn when he hears his name you want his attention.
Like all dog commands, using its name must not be overused.
If your dog doesn't look at you or ignores you, don't keep repeating it until it does, as this only tells the dog that it is fine to disobey you.
Also, if you want the dogs name to be effective at getting the dogs attention you must use it sparingly and not in all situations.
Overusing your dogs name can also cause confusion which you should avoid.
Like all dog training, make sure you practice the dogs name in a place where there are no distractions for you or the dog.
If you keep your training sessions short and focused you will see much better results, as dogs easily become tired and distracted.
Once they do, they will no longer be able to take in training effectively.
