- 1). Sketch a basic design of overlapping squares to use on your walls. Choose colors that go well together. Opt for colors in similar shades for a soft look. Contrasting colors make a bold statement.
- 2). Find paint colors that match the colors in your sketch. Select a few metallic colors if you want to add a touch of shimmer to your walls.
- 3). Use a level to draw the background squares. Draw with a chalk pencil for lines that you will be able to wash off.
- 4). Tape around the background squares with low-tack tape. Press on the tape to create a tight seal.
- 5). Roll on the paint with a foam roller. Take care not to get paint on the wall beyond the tape you applied in Step 4. Wipe up any mistakes with a damp rag as soon as possible. Use a foam brush along the edges of the wall.
- 6). Remove the tape as soon as you finish the square. Tape left on too long may pull up the paint underneath. Keep an eye out for any paint that may have bled under the tape. Carefully make small corrections with the point of a pencil covered in a rag.
- 7). Change to a fresh roller sleeve for each different color. Store roller sleeves for future use in a bag in the refrigerator. Paint all the background squares that do not overlap in a single day.
- 8). Tape out and paint the first batch of overlapping squares the next day. Paint the second batch of squares during a session on the following day. Continue until you have executed your design.
