- 1). Sip higher-quality whiskies neat. A small amount of water will free more of the natural flavors and aromas in the whiskey, whether added in liquid form or as ice in the drink.
- 2). Drink the very best whiskies at cool room temperature, like red wine. Use a tulip-shaped glass, with a wide bottom and a narrow top, to concentrate the whiskey's aromas on the nose. Brandy snifters are often used for this purpose.
- 3). Dilute the whiskey with soda water to make a lighter beverage. A "long drink" such as whiskey and soda is easier to nurse for a period of time, and is therefore better suited to social gatherings.
- 4). Mix less-distinguished whiskies with soft drinks and ice to make a cool drink for summertime consumption. Lemon-lime sodas, ginger ale and colas are all common choices.
- 5). Use your whiskey of choice to make a variety of mixed drinks or cocktails, suitable to the hour and the occasion. Serve lighter drinks with food, richer ones or neat spirits either before the meal or in lieu of dessert.
